People behind the blocking of Youtube in Morocco have to be reprimanded in proportion with the damage caused from ban. The news has made its way to BBC,New York times, Washington Post and a plethora of other news outlets in the world causing an unwanted negative advertising of a Kingdom that seeks to replenish its image and join the club of modern and free societies. Consequently, the ban on a high profile such as Youtube has tarnished the image of Morocco,a country in a democratic transition.
Officials behind the ban have caused more harm to the Kingdom than the video contents they were trying hard to censor.The authorities have to identify which department or persons were behind the idea and sack them if they really care about sending a message to the world that Morocco doesn't deserve to be on the infamous club of countries that block information from reaching their citizens.
Vivendi Universal , majority owner of Maroc Telecom, has also to clarify its position to its shareholders ,customers and the public about what happened.If VU keeps silent ,it will be sending a message to its Moroccan customers that they are nothing but a Cash Cow to milk.
ANRT, the Telecom Watchdog in Morocco, has to assume its responsibility and defend its good reputation in promoting the Moroccan telecommunication sector .The least it can do is request an explanation of what happened and seek guarantees that it will not happen again from the both the ISP and the authorities. The elections are coming up ,I wish any of the so called Moroccan parties can stir the issue in the parliament and seek answers to so many unanswered questions.

Les personnes deriere le blocage de Youtube au Maroc doivent être réprimandés en proportion avec les dommages causés par l'interdiction. La nouvelle a fait le tour du monde en passant par la BBC, New York Times, et le Washington Post et beaucoup d'autres agences de presse causant une publicité négative et bien sur non désirée sur un royaume qui cherche soigner son image pour joindre le club des sociétés modernes et libres. En conséquence, l'interdiction d'un site comme Youtube a terni l'image du Maroc, un pays dans une transition démocratique. Les fonctionnaires derrière l'interdiction ont causé plus de mal au royaume que le contenu visuel qu'ils essayaient dur de censurer. Les autorités doivent identifier le département ou les personnes étaient derrière l'idée et les virer s'ils veulent vraiment prouver que le Maroc ne mérite pas d'apparetenir au club des pays qui bloquent l'information .Vivendi Universal, propriétaire de majorité de Maroc Telecom, doit également clarifier sa position à ses actionnaires, à ses clients et au public au sujet de ce qui s'est produit. Si VU ne fait rien , il enverra un message à ses clients marocains qu'ils ne sont rien qu' une mine d'or. ANRT, la Watchdog de telecommunications au Maroc, doit assumer sa responsabilité et défendre sa bonne réputation de promoteur du secteur télécom au Maroc. La moindre des choses qu'ile peuvent faire est de demander une explication sur ce qui s'est produit et cherche des garanties de MT et des autorités que ca ne se produira pas dans le futur.

Since the news broke about the ban on Youtube in Morocco ,I kept a close eye on Moroccan press and media to see if and how they will tackle the issue.Now that Youtube is back on in Morocco , communication failure has proven to be a common denominator between Moroccan press, Maroc Telecom and the Moroccan government.The latter unsurprsingly failed to release any statement to confirm or deny its role in the flagrant act of restraint on freedom of information.Maroc Telecom , Videndi Universal's subsidiary, didn't even bother to inform , apologize, or explain to its customers what happened.What's even more shocking is that Moroccan press and media have completely ignored the issue.The only exception was Rachid Nini's Arabophone Almassae who wrote a good article and Assabah newspaper ,which have published a miniscule news brief on the left of its main page on Monday. The media's silence is just as mysterious as the reasons behind the 4-day ban on the famous video-sharing website. It's either that the managers at these media outlets are not aware of the importance and gravity of the issue or that they were instructed to keep a low profile on the then developing news. Given the state of the Moroccan newspapers' electronic web versions, it's easy to tell how much importance they give to the World wide web as a tool to inform , expand their readership and may be even generate revenue. Except from Telquel and Le Journal Hebdomadaire , I don't expect other papers will even bother to mention or analyse the Youtube story at a little deeper surface.Most of Moroccan papers' websites post their news when they are already old news as bloggers and webforums beat them to it since they are surely undermanned and underequipped reflecting old-fashioned Chief editors' strategy of pen and paper.To most of them, having a website is just for the prestige of it by saying we are here.Having more 3 million news-thirsty Moroccans abroad and still failing to capitalize on that to come up with a better ,more up-to-date, informative and maney-generating product, reveals how far back Moroccan Press professionals are lagging.



Des que la nouvelle au sujet de l'interdiction de Youtube au Maroc a commence a circuler , j'ai decider de observer si est comment la presse et medias marocaines aborderont la question. Maintenant que Youtube est de retour au Maroc, la panne de communication s'est avérée être un dénominateur commun chez la presse marocaine, Maroc telecom et le gouvernement marocain. Sans surprise, Les derniers échouent a produire n'importe quel rapport pour confirmer ou nier son rôle dans l'acte flagrant de la contrainte sur la liberté d'information. Maroc Telecom , la filiale du Geant Videndi Universal , n'ont même pas pris la peine d'informer, faire des excuses, ou d'expliquer à ses clients ce qui s'est produit. Ce qui est bien plus choquant c' est la presse Marocaine qui a complètement ignoré la question. La seule exception était le journal arabophone Assabah, qui a publié une depeche miniscule du côté gauche de sa page principale le lundi. Le silence des médias est assez mystérieux que les raisons derrière l'interdiction pendant quatre jours du célèbre site Web du Partage-vidéo . Pour la presse Marocaine, etant donné l'état des versions électroniques des journaux marocains, il est facile de dire combien d'importance ils donnent au World Wide Web comme outil pour informer, augmenter leur lectorat et peut être même generer du revenu. A part Telquel et Le Journal Hebdomadaire, je ne prévois pas que d'autres papiers prendront la peine même de mentionner ou analyser l'histoire de Youtube d'une maniere un peu plus profonde. Pour la plupart des journaux presents sur le Web ,leurs presence est juste pour le prestige pour dire que nous somme ici.

Youtube est Censure au Maroc/ Youtube is blocked in Morocco

Selon des sites en ligne et des amis au Maroc, l'Acces à Youtube est bloqué au Maroc. Personne ne sait la raison de ceci. En tous les cas, c'est le faux pas à prendre par le royaume. Youtube est un site Web tres connu et la nouvelle fera le tour du monde dans un ou deux jours ternissant l'image du Maroc tolérant et causant un recul aux réformes que le Maroc connait sous le reigne du jeune et réformiste roi. Le blocage des sites Web s'est avéré être une technique avec beaucoup de limitations en Arabie Saoudite, Chine et la Thaïlande et la même chose se produira au Maroc. C'est malheureux pour voir une telle chose se produire au Maroc ; un pays qui a fait des étapes géantes dans le domaine des libertés et des réformes socio-économiques dans la duree de 8 ans. According to psotings online and friends in Morocco , Access to Youtube is blocked .Nobody knows the reason for this.Whatever the reason is , it is the wrong step to take.Youtube is a high profile website and the news will be broadcast everywhere tarnishing the image of a tolerant Morocco and causing a setback to the reforms that Morocco has been udergoing under the young and reformist king.Blocking websites has proved to be a technique with many limitations in Saudi Arabia ,China and Thailand and the same thing will happen in Morocco.
It's quite sadening to see such a thing happening in Morocco;a country that has made giant steps in freedoms and socio-economic reforms in the span of short 8 years.

I Blog For The Maghreb

I was invited by DJ Louka to join the "I Blog For The Maghreb" Campaign on June 1st.I liked the idea.Therefore, this blog is joining the campaign to gather the Maghrebi bloggers around an action to seek a real integration of the Maghreb countries as well as going beyond of the conflicts blocking this process. Our is taken for June 1, each one will write a post for the Great Maghreb. It is an initiative that will perhaps be the first step that the politicians didn't manage not make yet. One asks to see projects and to hear speeches either. The Maghreb has alot more to offer than just terrorism.

Ce blog est en campagne pour rassembler les bloggeurs maghrébins autour d'une action qui vise à demander une intégration réelle des pays du Maghreb ainsi que le dépassement des conflits qui bloquent ce processus. Les « Etats-Unis du Maghreb » ou du « Maghreb uni » sont deux expressions que j'ai commencé à entendre ou lire plus souvent. La plupart des temps, les mots sont mentionnées par de jeunes chanteurs de Hip-Hop, chanteurs de Rai ou bloggers. Le mouvement Underground parmi des jeunes dans le Maghreb avance dans la scène artistique et avec elle viennent des voix de la dissidence ou simplement des voix des masses. Les personnes du Maghreb vivant sous des régimes ayant peu a faire avec la démocratie et la liberté d'expression, sont de plus en plus frustrés avec la situation politico-économique. L'ironie est que même les sympathisants d'Al-Qaida ont atteint l'état d'unité dans le Maghreb et ont obtenu le dessus sur les combats politiques inter-Maghrebennes qui gênent les efforts du développement et de l'unité. La jeunesse dans le Maghreb sont le seule espoir ont pour commencer de vraies tentatives de l'unité.Les politiciens corrompus , produits du post-colonialism, sont le vrai handicap et l'ennemi d'atteindre le « Maghreb uni » mais sont à peine défiés par une jeunesse qui voit son futur en Europe ou Amérique du Nord plutôt que dans sa patrie. La jeunesse dans le Maghreb a été Turned Off par la politique et les politiciens il y a longtemps. Le seul espoir pour les Maghrebins a les yeux ailleurs. Le Maghreb est devenu un grand secteur de passage pour que les jeunes aillent en Europe et l'Amérique, pour être un repas pour les requins ou « vont au paradis » après la détonation des explosifs autour de leur taille. Cependant, le Maghreb uni est entendu maintenant plus souvent par les jeunes. Avant qu'il ait été juste une encre sur le papier et un slogan vide pour le crédule. Maintenant c'est une idée qui se forme chez les jeunes et chaque percée dans le monde a commencé par une idée.


"United States Of Maghreb" or "Maghreb United" are two expressions that I started hearing or reading more often.Most of the times, the words are mentioned by either young Hip-Hop singers , Rai singers or bloggers. The underground movement amongst youngsters in the Maghreb is gaing ground in the artistic scene and with it come voices of dissent or simply voices of the masses. People of the Maghreb living under regimes having little to do with democracy and freedom of expression , are getting more and more frustrated with the politico-economic situation. The irony is that even al-Qaida sympathizers have reached the state of unity in the Maghreb and got over the inter-Maghreb political fights that hinder efforts of development and unity .
The youth in the Maghreb are the only hope people have for starting real attempts of unity. Post-Colonial products of corrupted politicians are the real handicap and the enemy of reaching "Maghreb United" but are hardly challenged by a disgruntled youth who sees his future in Europe or North America rather than in his homeland.Youth in the Maghreb has been turned off by politics long time ago.The only hope for Maghrebi people is looking elsewhere .The maghreb has become a big transit area for young people to go either to Europe and America, To be a meal for the fish or to "go to heaven" after detonating explosives around their waist.Yet, Maghreb United is being heard now more often by young people.Before it was just an ink on the paper and an empty slogan for the gullible.Now it is an idea bloiling in the heads and every breakthrough in the world has started with an idea.

Let's Give It To Air Controllers

When we take an airplane to fly anywhere we hardly think of a category of hard working people who keep the skies in order preventing aircrafts from crashing into each other.In this video ,we can see a busy airport rushing airplanes in before the eye of the storm reaches the airport.I can only imagine the stress the air controllers in this airport were on.It's equally amazing to see those airplanes as block dots in the sky while they carry hundreds of people ,who in turn have their own hopes, stories, and loved ones.

Quand nous prenons un avion nous pensons à peine à une catégorie des personnes travaiellent dure et qui maintiennent les cieux dans l'ordre. Dans cette vidéo, nous pouvons voir les avions précipitant a l'aéroport avant que l'orage atteigne l'aéroport. Je peux seulement imaginer le stresse des contrôleurs d'air dans cet aéroport . I received this email from a coworker.While I like and agree with the idea of not filling my gas tank on a specific day to show my unhappiness about the unjustified hike in gas prices, I just don't understand the hate some Americans holds towards the Middle East.

In April 1997, there was a "gas out" conducted nationwide in
protest of gas prices; overnight gasoline prices dropped .30 cents a
gallon
.
On May 15th 2007, all internet users are asked to not go to a gas
station
in
protest of high gas prices. Gas is now over $3.00 a gallon in most
places.

There are 73,000,000 + American members currently on the internet
network, and the average car takes about $30 to $50 to fill up. {Our
truck
takes $75. to fill.}

If all internet users did not go to the pump on the 15th, it would
take
$2,292,000,000.00 (that's almost 3 BILLION) out of the oil companies
pockets for just one day, so please do not go to the gas station on
May
15th and lets try to put a dent in the Middle Eastern oil industry for
at least one day.

"Hmar ou Bikheer!!"

I ran into this article on Menara portal.Found it unsual in the sense that Moroccan youth started having enough of being ridiculed ,muted , and ignored by the minority of 30% composed of parents , State officials and political parties leaders.I am a believer of innovation and creativity and the new generation of Moroccans started tapping on that skill to make their voice heard.Now we can see Moroccan youth making T-shirts that express how they feel in addition to fusion and hip-hop music to communicate with the outside world.


« Hmar ou Bikheer ! » (bourrique et fier de l’être). Qui n’a pas déjà entendu cette expression ? Au Maroc, certains, pour titiller les esprits bien pensants, revendiquent haut et fort leur affiliation à la moins futée des bêtes. D’autres sont allés plus loin, en ont fait une attitude et même un slogan pour une nouvelle marque !

Agacés par le « conformisme ambiant », Amine Benchiouich, Achraf Kouhen et Mohamed Smyej se sont inventés une nouvelle ligne de conduite, être bourrique et l’assumer. C’est dans cet esprit qu’est née la nouvelle marque marocaine « stounami » (mot dérivé de tsunami et stoune), dont une déclinaison tee-shirt porte le slogan « Hmar ou Bikheer » .

Les trois compères ont décidé de se réapproprier ce slogan-bouclier en vogue chez ceux que l’on montre du doigt pour leur style de vie jugé passif, pas assez ambitieux ou, tout simplement, en décalage avec les us et coutumes. Lire aussi :

« Hmar ou Bikheer » vise avant tout à proposer aux adeptes de la nouvelle scène créative marocaine l’attitude vestimentaire qui va avec, comme l’explique Amine : « Beaucoup de personnes qui gravitent autour de ce renouveau culturel adoptent des thèses plus ou moins altermondialistes mais portent des Nike. Ce qui est contradictoire. Avec « Hmar ou Bikheer » on leur propose d’être en phase avec leurs idées. »

« Hmar ou Bikheer » se veut une réponse à la frénésie consommatrice observée autour des grandes marques qui sont souvent hors de portée des portefeuilles marocains, mais que les jeunes, rodés au système « D », finissent toujours par se procurer.

Mais pour les créateurs du concept, « Hmar ou Bikheer », c’est surtout une réponse identitaire face au flou culturel dans lequel évoluent la plupart des Marocains qui ne savent pas trop « ce qu’ils sont, ou ils vont… »

Les concepteurs du projet espèrent ainsi dénoncer le « moule social » qui « case les gens » et « les contraint à l’hyper-performance. » comme l’explique Achraf.

« Depuis notre enfance, notre entourage nous a taxé de tous les noms, dont celui de Hmar, pour nous signifier notre incapacité supposée à nous adapter aux situations et aux changements. Il est en effet difficile de trouver sa place dans un milieu où règne l’hypocrisie sociale. »

Intelligemment, « Hmar ou Bikheer » tend à souligner ce paradoxe. Derrière les subtiles âneries du concept, « Hmar ou Bikheer » cache un état d’âme qui consiste à « s’accepter tel qu’on est. »

Moroccan Americans' Lobbyism Makes Progress

In light of the political showdown between Algeria and Morocco over the latter's Saharian teritorries, Rabat's foreign diplomacy hadn't had much success in the US convincing lawmakers to support its right in preserving its territorial integrity of its southern provinces.The tide has recently changed in favor of Rabat due to change of tactics such as making the right friends in the Capitol Hill and K street and in seeking help of Americans of Moroccan origins.
Algeria and the Oil lobby in America had had the upper hand over Pro-Morocco Lobbies in the 90s ,which made it difficult for Rabat to make progress in defence of its claim to its historical and legal rights in maintaining its Southern provinces known as the Sahara. Under the rule of the young King Mohammad VI , Moroccan diplomacy has shifted its focus or rather expanded it to reach the other side of the Atlantic .New lobbying firms have been approached and new alliances have been set up.Therefore, we have witnessed more activity and involvment from the Moroccan Diplomatic representation in Washington,DC and capitalizing on old friends of Morocco such as Former Ambassador to Morocco Eduard Gabriel ,leading to a change of approach that has proven to be successful in the recent weeks.
The ever growing base of Moroccan Americans in terms of influence and affluence has attracted the attention of the Moroccan diplomats.Moroccan senior officials such as the King's economic counselor ,Andrey Azoulay, the head of CORCAS ,Oueld khallihon and Head of PJD Islamic party , Saadine Othmani, Have been hopping US major cities to meet with Moroccan Americans in order to gain support and to seek assistance such is the case with CORCAS's head.That indicated the awareness of the Moroccan government of the significant and important role that the Moroccan Diaspora can play in Domestic and International challenges facing the kingdom.Unlike 6 or 8 years ago,Moroccan Americans now receive electronic newsletters with invitations to PR events or round-ups of activities of Moroccan Embassy in Washington in general and the Moroccan AMerican community in particular. Days before the UN Security Council's meeting to decide on the Issue of the conflict between Algeria's backed POLISARIO and Morocco over the Moroccan Sahara, Staffers of US lawmakers have witnessed an outpoor of emails and phone calls from Moroccan Americans asking their representatives to support the Moroccan proposal of Self-Governance under the Moroccan sovreignty - A very courageous,innovative,and pragmatic solution to a conflict that has lasted three decades now.Consequently, Hundred sixty seven US lawmakers called on Bush to support the Moroccan proposal ,which translated in the UN Security Council into the support of France,Spain,and U.S of the Moroccan postition in the face of South Africa,Panama and Peru. If this is supposed to mean something,it only means that when a government joins efforts with its citizens for the protection of the motherland ,the results can exceed the most optimistic expectations.This is only one step in the journey of thousands miles.Go Morocco.
